School District # 9

1841 - The first free school was established in Rochester. At 980 Long Pond Rd. was small schoolhouse constructed of cut stone or "rubble". On a Sunday in July 1841 a small group met with the reverend William Williams, a Methodist circuit rider. The 7 persons established the Greece-Methodist Protestant Church. Another group meeting at the Greece Center schoolhouse on Latta Rd joined the this group a few months later to increase membership to 21.This was meeting place for local farmers to bring their bibles and to worship on Sunday Mornings.

1867 - The church purchased the Old Christian church at Greece Center.10 years later they moved 2 miles south to the present site on Maiden Lane.

When the building was built in 1915 only one room was used at first with one teacher for eight grades. Later as the school's population increased two teachers were employed. 1917 - The old cobblestone building was torn down and replaced by a larger wooden school building.

1922 - Gas Lighting was removed for electric in the area.

Phone service start rollingout to Greece around 1940 to 1950.

1944 - The school was abandoned in 1944 when 40 children started attending Greece Central School.

1947, District 9 officially combined with Central District #1.

Former pupils bought desks, pictures, blackboards, and other items at an auction held at the vacated schoolhouse.This two-room district schoolhouse, where children in the old school district 9, Greece, studied their three R's for over 30 years was auctioned off at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 11, 1949. The school district had title for 95 years at that location when Harold Tebo bought the property from Central District #1.

Harold converted the schools two large classrooms and several smaller rooms into a huge living room, two large bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen and dining alcove. This is the schoolhouse as it stands today on Long Pond Rd. This picture is the of Spring 1999.The home is currently owned by Douglas and Barbara Worboys. Barbara is Harold Tebo's granddaughter. This is the one room school house that has been in operation since pre-civil war days.
